Teacher or a Killer?

Yesterday evening was tiresome. Frequent power cut in the office made me sweat a lot and the heat on the top of everything agitated the mind. Fully exhausted me reached home and put the TV on only to watch news of random brutal killings happening all over the world.

A school teacher punishing a low performing student, Shanno, harshly, causing eventually the death of the later. This was the news of the day! What a news! Where the hell the humanity has gone? Teaching is considered to be one of the noblest jobs in the world and a teacher is supposed to help learn a student. If a student can’t read/identify an English character (which is learnt to be the reason why that teacher punished the student), in my opinion, it is her teacher’s failure. There are many ways to do any thing in this world. Why couldn’t Shanno’s teacher use a different way to help the child learn English?

And what great loss would have happened to the world if the poor soul hadn’t learn English, in the first place? I ask you, how many people in Power at various functions in the Government of India can Read / Write / Speak English fluently? Every function in the Govt of India works either in Hindi or in the Regional Language of the state. And if a poor child cannot learn English with pace others do, why force the poor child to such an extreme? Why such a big farce is created? There are hundreds of examples where people have become successful without knowing English.

And this is not just one incident. There are hundreds of Shannos in India who suffer everyday from such teachers’ brutally insane & inhuman acts.

This incident raised many questions in my mind…

Why Do the teachers in India assume the power to brutally punish a student?

Does a Degree in Education (D.Ed. or B.Ed) really qualify a person to be a teacher?

Is a school worthy to educate a student if a bribe of Rs. 500000 is taken by the management to designate a Tom Dick & Harry as a Teacher?

Do we want a false education system which focuses more on “remembering” than “Learning”?

Does a teacher (or anybody for that matter) value other’s Life equally?

With questions galore in mind I retire to bed, hoping only to see a better tomorrow.

The question mentioning Rs.500000 bribery brings out the reality. Corruption in the education system is going to lead to destruction of our child's future.

Hey Ajay,
Its really shocking to know such an incident happened in India?
That teacher must be mentally ill to punish a kid this way. It would be unfair to condemn on the whole Education System though on the basis of this case.
Hopefully the other teachers as well as parents get a lesson from this incident!

Let the teachers be matured. (rough draft)
This is happening everyday and everywhere in India. This is only an example, came through media. A teacher must have some qualities to make the children understand without punishing them. There are two sides of this situation; one is teacher’s/school management’s behavior and another is parental. Let’s see one by one.
1. Teacher’s behavior:
As Ajay said completing B.Ed or D.Ed really carves a teacher?? Absolutely not! You should be basically interested in teaching. Very few people see teaching as a profession. Actually, teaching and learning is process. Getting admission to D.Ed is become a fashion, rather a trend. This is the only ‘service’ people starts earning at very young age. There should be some changes in Indian elementary Education system.
It’s true; admission to D.Ed opens after 10th, means at the age of 16 or 17. 2 years to complete the course. Means they join on job after 10+2 and at the age of 19 or 20. If we see the curriculum of D.Ed, there is not much concentration given on children psychology, how to get involved in children, how to make them understand any topic, etc. Being a teacher they can’t be enough mature to teach there small children. No one cares for importance of elementary education in India. Everybody feels what is difficult in teaching 1-4 grades in school? Teach them only alphabets and some songs. Finished…. But, it is not that much. Actual age of learning is 0-10. In these years child learns to talk, walk, smile, and many thing to do… with observation.
In early school grades the vital role of the teacher is to increase child’s logical thinking, by various plays, songs, small stories, etc.. But, our 10+2 teacher actually can’t perform plays, songs, stories.. There should be an intensive teaching and learning curriculum those who wants to become a teacher. There should be 12+5 pattern to become a primary teacher. Means, 5 years of full course. Let the teacher be matured first.
